Listening Portfolio 7

I read other students blog and I thought Anna's strategies are very amusing so I just try to do her strategies.

Source: You tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6LPia75tiE)

Strategies: 1. take notes
2. repeat words

Evaluation: It is good way to remember and understand. I wrote down some keywords and some important information. Repeated words is also good, for example, in our life, we listen more than once. I mean, in real life, we also ask "sorry?", or "pardon?". so it is really helpful to understand completely.

Reflection: I think Anna's strategies are really good for me. I do agree with Anna as she wrote making notes were not always realistic.some exams like TOEFL, we can't take note, but in practice, we can do like that. It is very good for practice. When i can listen, I will try doing this. Repeated word is also useful practice for living in life. We sometimes listen more than once, so it is really close to real life, and we can accustom to English idioms or slung as we listen many time.

Listening Portfolio 6

Strategy: Think about pause

Evaluation: This strategy needs to think about pause. I need to think what rules pause does. Generally, after pause, it comes important words or essential information which we should not miss. Maybe this strategy help to catch keyword like something important.

Reflection: This strategy is very useful to know what keyword is, and also help me understand the things clear. However, sometimes, I just focus on pause, and I lost main idea. This strategy is helpful to know the context of conversation though. I need to use many strategies not only this one but also I did before. I can't forget that i need to concentrate on the conversation, I mean, I mustn't focus on just strategy.

Listening portfolio 5

Source : Talking on the phone (Air New Zealand)

Strategies: 1. Listening for keywords
2. Listening for stressed words

Evaluation: 1. In this talking, I just changed the date which I leave here, so I just guess what the information speaker wants to know. I just guess before using these strategies. I just focus on the keywords, like What is your Passport number? like that. It is good way to know what speaker wants to know.

2. Stressed word is always important information. Sometimes we can notice what speaker is talking about from stressed word like "When", "Which date" in this conversation.

Reflection: I think if I use these strategies together, I understand almost. Even though, I missed keyword, Strategy 2 cover the conversation, I mean, Strategy 2 help me out to understand what speaker says. These strategies are useful but I just concentrate these strategies, I miss all conversation, so I find it difficult to just think about these strategies. I need to listen conversation using not only these strategies but also I need to think what conversation is going on.

Listening portfolio 4

Source; News "Education in NZ"

Strategy: Focus on screen first

Evaluation: It is very important thing because we can get information from the screen. Moreover, we can understand little bit about what is talking.

Reflection: It was really useful for me because when I watched the news for the first time, I couldn't understand the topic. However, I just stopped listening and then just focused on watching. I can understand roughly what was talking about from the screen. After that, I focused on just listening. I understood mostly. If I can watch news at least twice, this strategy is really helpful to understand.

Listening portfolio 3

Source: TV drama DVD "Ugly Betty"

Strategies: 1. looking at body language
2. look it without subtitle

Evaluation: 1. Looking at body languages carefully, it helps to understand what person is talking about. I mean, it is easy to understand because sometimes we can guess from body languages.

2. It is really hard because speakers talk too fast, but I can understand partly, we
can guess the context based on them. Then, watch it twice without subtitle. After that, watch it with subtitle.

Reflection: 1. It is really useful that looking the body languages carefully. From it, I can understand what the speaker feel about and thought. This means I can guess what the speaker is trying to say.

2. It is really hard because even though I watch it with subtitle, there are many slung. That's why I can't understand perfectly. However, I can understand partly and it's useful for guessing what they are talking about.

Listening portfolio2

Source: CD "I'm yours" (sang by Jason Mraz)

Strategy: Guess from title

Evaluation: It is really useful because sometimes we can know what the story is from the title. Moreover, we can guess what the story is like and easy to prepare for listening.

Reflection: It is really easy way to start listening. From the title, I immediately notice what is talking (singing) about. I can understand little bit about situation from the title.

Listening portfolio 1

Source; Listening to NZ Advanced 4C

Strategies

1.Listen many times until understandinng

2.Write down some part and check if it is carrect

Evaluation

1. When I listen to this textbook I can't catch some words. However, I listen to CD over and over and then I can catch them. It is not perfect though. Listening many time is really nice not just one time because in life when we can't understand what speaker says, we say "Pardon?" like that, and then we can listen again. This is really useful for improving listening skill.

2. This also help improving listening skill. I can know which words I couldn't catch, and I can practice how to listen the person's pronunciation, like linking and so on. It is helpful not only listening but also grammar.

Reflection

1. I think this strategy is really useful for me. When I listen to again and again, I notice that many words which I couldn't catch at the first time. This means that I missed a lot of words during listening, and I can practice it by listening over and over.

2. I think it also good way to develop my listening skill because there are many words which have same sound. Sometimes I confused when I listen to conversation, but I think this strategy help to solve this problem.

Introduction

Hello everyone! I'm Tsubasa and am from Japan. I am a university student in Japan. I have been living in New zealand for 6 months. My home is located in Unitec campus 311 building. I am living with 4 people. They are Kiwi. My hobbies are watching movies, hanging out with my friends, playing saxophone, and doing exercise.

The reason I study in Diploma is that I need to have the good English skill. Frankly, my English skill is not enough to communicate with the others. My Japanese university teacher recommended me to study abroad. It is really good experience for me though. During this course, I want to master higher level of English. I especially want to improve my speaking skill.
